چکیده

To enable the transition away from a fossil-fuel-based energy economy, it is essential to address, in addition to energy extraction from sustainable resources, the problem of energy storage. We pursue in this work a storage strategy that relies on the capacity of selected nonstoichiometric metal oxides to uptake and release oxygen. Specifically, doped cerium oxide (ceria), a relatively abundant material, is cycled between MO2 and MO2!d (where M represents both cerium and the dopant) using thermal energy as the input, ideally derived from solar heating, and the changes in oxidation state are utilized to produce a chemical fuel. For the production of hydrogen the reaction cycle is given as:

Combined Ceria Reduction and Methane Reforming in a Solar-Driven Particle-Transport Reactor

We report on the experimental performance of a solar aerosol reactor for carrying out the combined thermochemical reduction of CeO2 and reforming of CH4 using concentrated radiation as the source of process heat. The 2 kWth solar reactor prototype utilizes a cavity receiver enclosing a vertical Al2O3 tube which contains a downward gravity-driven particle flow of ceria particles, either co-curre...

Catalytic partial oxidation of methane to synthesis gas over Ni–CeO2

The partial oxidation of methane to syngas was studied in this work over Ni-containing ceria catalysts with nickel content of 5, 10 and 20 at.% at atmospheric pressure. All catalysts, in the as prepared state, showed similar activity and CO selectivity at T ≥ 550◦C. Catalyst pre-reduction was not required. Reaction mixtures were dilute, containing 3 mol% CH4 and 1.5 mol% O2. Methane conversion ...

Recent Developments in the Partial Oxidation of Methane to Syngas

Natural gas is catalytically converted into several bulk chemicals such as ammonia, methanol, dimethyl ether, and synthetic liquid fuels by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and similar processes. The main step in the conversion of natural gas to these products is the production of synthesis gas with the desired composition ranging from H2/CO = 3:1 used for the production of ammonia to the 1:1 mixture ...
